Rising Joc aims to lead Dodgers to victory
Jun 30, 2015 - 2:39 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Rookie Joc Pederson looks to continue his power surge on Tuesday night as the Los Angeles Dodgers try to even their three-game set with the Arizona Diamondbacks.Pederson was one of three Los Angeles Dodgers to homer in last night's 10-6 loss, giving him 20 on the season. He has already set a franchise record for the most home runs by a rookie before the All-Star break, surpassing Mike Piazza's 18 during the 1993 campaign, and has reached base safely in 17 of his past 19 games.
Pederson has an outside chance of matching the National League rookie record of most home runs hit before July 1. Wally Berger holds the mark with 22 in 1930, while Albert Pujols slugged 21 homers in 2001.
Despite Pederson's longball, the Dodgers were unable to hold off the Diamondbacks on Monday night after starter Mike Bolsinger was forced out after four innings of work due to a stomach ailment stemming from possible food poisoning.
Home runs by Pederson, Andre Ethier and Yasmani Grandal in the third inning had extended Los Angeles' lead to 4-0, but Arizona scored twice in three straight innings from the fifth to the seventh before putting the game away with a four-run eighth inning.
"We did a great job answering," Arizona manager Chip Hale said. "I was proud of the guys not giving up."
Paul Goldschmidt extended his hitting streak to 10 straight games and capped the big eighth inning with a two-run single. Yasmany Tomas, David Peralta and Nick Ahmed all ended with two RBI as Arizona snapped a seven-game slide to Los Angeles.
L.A. had won four of five and is just a half-game ahead of San Francisco for first in the NL West.
Carlos Frias looks to win a second straight start tonight for the Dodgers and move back above .500.
Frias snapped a string of three straight losing decisions with Thursday's 5-0 victory over the hosting Chicago Cubs. He logged five scoreless frames of seven-hit ball, walking three and striking out five. Frias moved to 5-5 on the year with a 4.31 earned run average on the year.
The 25-year-old righty did not get a decision when he last faced Arizona on June 9 despite 6 2/3 innings of one-run ball and is 1-0 against them with a 0.64 ERA over three meetings. That includes two starts and he has limited the Diamondbacks to one run over 14 innings.
The Diamondbacks turn tonight to Rubby De La Rosa, who has allowed two earned runs in three starts since getting lit up by the Dodgers earlier this month.
De La Rosa was drilled for nine runs and 10 hits over five innings of a setback to Los Angeles on June 8. That left him with two losses in two career meetings with the Dodgers, allowing 14 runs over 10 innings for a 12.60 ERA.
The right-hander has been on fire since, picking up consecutive wins over San Francisco and San Diego before getting a no-decision in Colorado on Thursday. De La Rosa was in line to win after yielding a run on five hits and one walk over seven innings, but the bullpen gave up the lead in a 6-4 setback.
De La Rosa is 6-3 on the year while bringing his ERA down to 4.69.
