Giants-Dodgers Preview
Apr 15, 2016 - 6:42 AM Another edition of the rivalry between Clayton Kershaw and Madison Bumgarner lived up to the hype, with the latter taking the former deep - again. They meet again Friday night at Dodger Stadium, where Bumgarner has beaten Kershaw all three times they have matched up there.
The pitchers considered the top left-handed starters in baseball met for the eighth time Saturday in the Dodgers' 3-2, 10-inning road victory.
''When those two guys match up with each other, it's a special day and there's definitely a different energy in the ballpark - and a different buzz in the batter's box,'' Dodgers catcher A.J. Ellis said. ''You've got two guys who are as competitive and as talented as any two pitchers we have in our sport.
"One guy (Kershaw) has been decorated as highly as could possibly be imagined in the regular season, and the other guy (Bumgarner) is arguably the greatest postseason pitcher of all time."
Kershaw (1-0, 1.20 ERA) was charged with two runs in eight innings and Bumgarner (1-0, 3.27) one in six with eight strikeouts. The highlight came when Bumgarner drilled his 12th career homer in the second inning for his second versus Kershaw after going deep against him May 21.
"I think I got it in there, maybe it was probably over the plate a little too much. He hit it pretty good," Kershaw said. "Any time you give up a home run to the pitcher, it doesn't feel good. It's supposed to be the easiest out you have. He's a little different, obviously. He's a pretty solid hitter. You don't want to give up a hit to a pitcher let alone a home run."
Bumgarner is 3 for 16 at the plate against Kershaw, who has three singles in 17 at-bats off his counterpart.
On the line Friday is Bumgarner's 3-0 mark in three Dodger Stadium outings opposite Kershaw, who posted baseball's third-best home ERA a season ago at 1.67 ahead of his first 2016 outing there. Bumgarner has a 1.23 ERA in those victories while Kershaw lost all three despite a 2.45 mark.
Kershaw is 7-1 with a 1.78 ERA in 13 starts against the Giants when not facing Bumgarner.
The Giants (6-4) come to town dealing with multiple injuries. Buster Posey left as a precaution in the seventh inning of Thursday's 11-6 defeat at Colorado in his return after missing two games with a bruised right foot while shortstop Brandon Crawford left the game in the seventh with a sore left hip.
''He has a left hip flexor and it flared up on him,'' said manager Bruce Bochy about Crawford.
Posey has faced Kershaw more than any hitter, batting .228 in 79 at-bats. Hunter Pence is 5 for 58 with 16 strikeouts against Kershaw and Brandon Belt, who has homered in two straight games and three of his last four, is 3 for 40 with 22 strikeouts - the most of any batter.
The Dodgers (6-4) have batters who have fared similarly versus Bumgarner. Adrian Gonzalez is hitting .156, Justin Turner is at .222 and Howie Kendrick is 2 for 12.
Turner is expected to return to the lineup after not starting Thursday's 5-2 victory over Arizona with a left hand injury.
Los Angeles second baseman Kike Hernandez is 7 for 13 off Bumgarner with two hits last weekend. Hernandez hit a two-run double during a five-run seventh inning Thursday.
The Giants, who have dropped four straight at Dodger Stadium, will place reliever Sergio Romo on the disabled list with a strained right flexor tendon.
