Royals-Angels Preview

Apr 26, 2016 - 6:47 AM The last time Edinson Volquez was this dominant to start a season, he ended up appearing in his only All-Star Game and setting a career high in wins.

Volquez looks to match the best start of his career and help the Kansas City Royals to a bounce-back performance against the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday night.

Volquez (3-0, 1.46 ERA) has a chance to go 4-0 for just the second time in his 11-plus years in the majors. He last did it through five starts with a 1.23 ERA in 2008 en route to a career-high 17 wins with Cincinnati.

The right-hander had perhaps his best performance of 2016, allowing five hits in seven innings of a 4-0 win over Detroit on Thursday.

"I think my curve was hanging a little," Volquez said. "I gave up some singles on that. But my fastball was good, had a lot of movement on my two-seamer."

The Royals (12-7) have won the last six games with Volquez on the mound, including Games 1 and 5 of last year's World Series.

He'll try to help end Kansas City's three-game road skid in his first matchup with the Angels (9-11) since he was with Texas in 2007.

The Royals are batting .190 with six runs over that stretch, mustering just four hits in Monday's 6-1 series-opening loss.

They'll try to turn things around against Jered Weaver, who posted a 6.97 ERA and surrendered three homers over 10 1/3 innings in losing both starts against Kansas City last season.

Weaver (2-0, 3.12) was impressive Thursday, yielding one run and three hits in seven innings of a 3-2 win over the Chicago White Sox. The velocity on his fastball is improving after it dropped to 78 mph during spring training.

"Nothing but positives," center fielder Mike Trout said of Weaver on MLB's official website. "Each outing, it's getting better. (His velocity) is coming back. I thought I saw some 86 up there. But it doesn't matter to him. He's out there hitting his spots."

Trout is 10 for 20 with three homers over the past six games, connecting for a solo shot Monday. The 2014 AL MVP was hitting .220 with one home run and four RBIs through his first 14 games.

Trout historically has fared well at home against the Royals, batting .459 during an 11-game hitting streak with six homers, 11 RBIs and 13 runs.

Albert Pujols is 4 for 8 with three homers in his last two games, hitting a pair of home runs Monday. That stretch follows an 0-for-26 skid for Pujols, who is batting .171.

Those homers raised his career total to 565 to rank 13th all-time. The three-time NL MVP is 6 for 31 with four home runs over his last eight games against the Royals.

Kansas City's Eric Hosmer is batting .339 during a 15-game hitting streak, one shy of Baltimore's Manny Machado for the longest in the majors this season.

Hosmer, though, is .195 hitter in 19 games in Anaheim. He went 2 for 5 with a homer off Weaver last year.
