Brown, Athletics look to rebound in Tokyo
Mar 25, 2008 - 6:15 PM Boston (1-0) at Oakland (0-1), 6:00 am EDTOAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- A questionable base-running decision by Emil Brown ultimately cost the Oakland Athletics their season opener. He will have his chance to make amends Wednesday.
Brown and the Athletics look to bounce back as they complete their two-game series at the Tokyo Dome with another contest against the defending champion Boston Red Sox.
With the Red Sox holding a 6-4 edge in the 10th inning Tuesday, Brown drove in rookie Daric Barton with a double to right-center but then made a critical mistake. Anticipating a throw home, Brown tried to stretch the hit into a triple and was tagged out in a rundown.
Bobby Crosby and Jack Hannahan followed with back-to-back singles before Boston closer Jonathan Papelbon induced a weakout groundout by Kurt Suzuki, giving his club a 6-5 triumph.
Manny Ramirez provided a two-run double in the top of the frame to give the Red Sox their two-run edge. Ramirez's clutch two-out hit was made possible by Brandon Moss' solo homer in the ninth.
Hoping for the sweep, Boston will send Jon Lester to the mound. The 24-year-old Lester went 4-0 with a 4.57 ERA in 12 games last season.
Oakland will counter with Rich Harden, who started just 13 contests over the past two seasons. Harden posted a 1-2 record with a 2.46 ERA and 27 strikeouts in sevengames - four starts - last season.
