In new role, Mets' Martinez makes first start of season

MIAMI (Ticker) - For the first time in his New York Mets' career Pedro Martinez has taken a back seat.

Martinez makes his first start of the season as the Mets aim for a second straight win over the Florida Marlins on Tuesday.

Newly acquired ace Johan Santana threw seven outstanding innings and David Wright drove in three runs as the Mets posted a 7-2 Opening Day victory on Monday.

Santana, who was acquired in a four-player with Minnesota this offseason, has replaced Martinez as the Mets' No. 1 starter.

The two-time Cy Young Award winner was dominant, allowing just two runs and three hits with eight strikeouts in his Mets debut.

"As good as advertised," Wright said.

While Martinez is no longer the team's ace, the three-time Cy Young Award winner wants to prove he still has something left in the tank. The 36-year-old returned from rotator cuff surgery last September and went 3-1 with a 2.57 ERA in five starts.

The Marlins will send Rick VandenHurk to the mound. The righthander went 4-6 with a 6.83 ERA in 17 starts last season.
