Final/10
Rockies attempt to spark listless offense
Apr 6, 2008 - 1:42 PM Arizona (3-2) at Colorado (1-4) 3:05 pm EDTDENVER (Ticker) - The Colorado Rockies attempt to end their offensive woes and avoid being swept by the Arizona Diamondbacks when the teams conclude their three-game set Sunday at Coors Field.
Last season, Colorado was the second-highest scoring team in the National League with 860 runs. However, that production has not carried over into this season as the team has produced a major league-low eight runs in five games.
That ineptitude was on display again in Saturday's 7-2 setback against Arizona when the Rockies scored on a first-inning homer from Todd Helton and an unearned run one inning later.
Including Matt Holliday - who went 2-for-4 with a double on Saturday - the Rockies have enjoyed a great deal of success against Arizona starter Edgar Gonzalez, against whom the All-Star outfielder is 4-for-4 in his career. Helton also has two home runs against the righthander.
Gonzalez (NR) will be making his season debut.
If the Rockies' bats continue to struggle, it will be incumbent upon Franklin Morales, who is also making his first appearance of the season, to be on top of his game. The lefthander went 3-2 with a 3.43 ERA in eight starts after being recalled from the minors last August.
