Pujols off to hot start despite injured elbow
Apr 23, 2008 - 1:27 PM St Louis (13-8) at Pittsburgh (8-12) 7:05 pm EDTPITTSBURGH (Ticker) - Albert Pujols needs to have surgery on his right elbow, not that anyone would notice.
Pujols looks to continue his hot hitting when the St. Louis Cardinals open a two-game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday.
A six-time All-Star, Pujols eventually will need to have Tommy John surgery to repair a torn ligament in his elbow. However, the 2005 National League MVP opted to have the surgery following this season as it requires at least eight months of rehabilitation time.
The injury has not slowed Pujols' production as the 28-year-old slugger has reached base in all 21 games this season while posting a .352 batting average with four home runs, 16 RBI and a .495 on-base percentage.
Pujols should continue his offensive explosion against Wednesday's starter Ian Snell (2-1, 4.07 ERA). Pujols is hitting .563 (9-of-16) against Snell with four home runs and seven RBI in 20 career plate appearances.
Todd Wellemeyer (2-0, 3.24) counters for the Cardinals. The 29-year-old righthander picked up the win after allowing one run and four hits in seven inning while striking out six during Friday's 11-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants.
