Cy Young Award winners Peavy, Webb duel for fifth time
Apr 27, 2008 - 1:48 PM Arizona (17-7) at San Diego (10-15) 4:05 pm EDTSAN DIEGO (Ticker) -- The San Diego Padres ended their long home offensive drought on Saturday at the expense of the Arizona Diamondbacks. A repeat of such a performance one day later appears unlikely.
The last two National League Cy Young Award winners do battle on Sunday when Arizona's Brandon Webb and San Diego's Jake Peavy face off in the finale of a three-game series.
Peavy, the reigning Cy Young Award winner, followed Webb's award-winning campaign in 2006. Both righthanders appear well on their way to making another run at the award this season as well as Peavy (3-0, 2.00 ERA) and Webb (5-0, 2.31) are posting similar lines through five starts this season.
The dynamic duo has faced each other four times with the Padres' ace owning a slight advantage, going 1-0 with a 1.16 ERA in those games while Webb is 0-1 despite a strong 3.14 ERA in their matchups.
However, each pitcher will be looking to rebound from their worst outings of the season.
Peavy allowed four runs and seven hits, including a season-high two homers - over six frames in a 11-7 setback against Houston on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Webb won his fifth straight start for the first time since winning six consecutive outings from July 25-August 22, 2007, when he permitted three runs and nine hits with seven strikeouts over six innings in Tuesday's 5-4 victory over San Francisco.
