Zambrano, Gallardo look to cool bats as Cubs host Brewers
May 1, 2008 - 12:14 PM Milwaukee (15-12) at Chicago Cubs (17-10) 2:20 pm EDTCHICAGO (Ticker) - The first two games of the series between the Milwaukee Brewers and Chicago Cubs has produced 41 runs. A continuation of that offensive prowess is unlikely to continue in the finale.
The Cubs host the Brewers in the rubber game of a three-game set on Thursday.
Milwaukee claimed the series opener on Tuesday, 10-7, only to have the tables turned on it on Wednesday in a 19-5 loss to Chicago. The Cubs have scored at least seven runs in six straight home games.
A repeat of the offensive fireworks appears nearly impossible as Carlos Zambrano (4-1, 2.21 ERA) battles Yovani Gallardo (0-0, 0.64) in the finale.
Zambrano has been outstanding over his last three starts - all wins - and has lasted exactly seven frames each time. In Wednesday's 7-0 win over Washington, the righthander allowed just five hits and didn't walk a batter for the third straight game.
While he doesn't have any wins to show for it, Gallardo has been even sharper than the Cubs' ace, allowing one run and 10 hits in 14 innings since coming off the disabled list with a left knee injury. However, Milwaukee has not provided him with much support.
In the Brewers' 3-0 loss to Florida on April 25, Gallardo tossed seven scoreless innings, permitting six hits and two walks while striking out five.
