Red Sox hope for return to form against Rays
May 2, 2008 - 1:45 PM Tampa Bay (16-12) at Boston (17-13) 7:05 pm EDTBOSTON (Ticker) - When the Boston Red Sox last saw the Tampa Bay Rays, their vaunted offense struggled to come through on many scoring opportunities. As they meet again on Friday, little has changed.
The Red Sox hope to shake their offensive woes when they embark on a three-game set with the Rays in a battle of the American League East's top two teams.
Boston was fourth in the major leagues in runs last season, and similar production was expected from an offense that returned all of its major contributors. However, the Red Sox managed a total of five runs - one in the final two games - in Tampa Bay over the weekend as the Rays swept the three-game series.
While Boston returned to Fenway Park to take two of three from Toronto in the series after, its offensive struggles continued. The Red Sox managed just three runs in that three-game set, including Thursday's 3-0 loss in the series finale.
Clay Buchholz (1-2, 4.08 ERA) will certainly be hoping for a return to form by his offense as he takes the mound on Friday. The 23-year-old turned in his second straight impressive start on Saturday - striking out nine in eight innings - but took the fall due to the Red Sox's offensive woes in a 2-1 loss to the Rays.
The young righthander will get another opportunity to take on the pitcher he faced in the first matchup when Edwin Jackson (2-2, 3.86) makes his sixth start of the season.
The 24-year-old righthander did not factor into the decision on Saturday, but allowed just one run and five hits over seven innings in Saturday's triumph.
