Matsuzaka, Red Sox look to keep rolling
May 5, 2008 - 1:33 PM Boston (20-13) at Detroit (14-18) 7:05 pm EDTDETROIT (Ticker) - The Boston Red Sox and their resurgent offense will be gunning for a fourth consecutive victory Monday when they visit the Detroit Tigers.
The Red Sox are coming off a three-game sweep of the Tampa Bay Rays in which they scored 26 runs combined. In the eight games previous, Boston had managed a total of 17 runs scored.
Kevin Youkilis was the big hitter on Sunday, sliding into David Ortiz's customary No. 3 spot in the batting order and driving in four runs. Ortiz had the day off to rest his ailing knee.
The Red Sox took two of three from the Tigers at Fenway Park in the second week of April, scoring 19 runs in the three-game set.
Daisuke Matsuzaka (4-0, 2.52 ERA) will attempt to earn his fifth win of the season for Boston on Monday. The Japanese righthander pitched seven scoreless innings in his last outing but did not factor in the win as the Red Sox beat Toronto, 1-0.
Matsuzaka earned a win over Detroit earlier this season, presiding over a 5-0 Red Sox triumph. The 27-year-old allowed just four hits in 6 2/3 while striking out seven and walking four to earn his second win over the Tigers in three career starts.
Detroit will counter with Jeremy Bonderman, who picked up the win April 9 at Boston with one earned run in five innings. The 25-year-old righthander has been effective this season despite some control problems.
Bonderman has issued 23 walks in 35 innings this season, but stayed in the zone for the most part against the Yankees on Wednesday - walking two in 7 2/3 innings - to earn a win.
The Tigers were swept over the weekend by the Minnesota Twins, prompting manager Jim Leyland to promise "major changes" to his lineup for Monday's game.
