Werth, Phillies set to face road-weary Braves
May 14, 2008 - 12:40 PM Atlanta (19-19) at Philadelphia (22-18) 7:05 pm EDTPHILADELPHIA (Ticker) - Jayson Werth will attempt to lead the Philadelphia Phillies to their third straight home win when they host the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday for the middle contest of a three-game set.
Werth had three hits and tied his career-high with four RBI to help the Phillies rally from a three-run deficit and claim a 5-4 win Tuesday. He is batting .271 with six home runs and 18 RBI on the season.
The 28-year-old Werth nearly went from hero to goat, however, when he misjudged Brian McCann's potentially game-ending flyout to center. Werth broke in and watched helplessly as the ball sailed over his head for an RBI double that pulled Atlanta within 5-4.
"I read the swing, but the crowd was yelling there and I wasn't able to hear the contact," Werth said. "(McCann) kind of one-handed it away on an off-speed pitch. I read (the flyball) in right off the bat, but after a few steps in, I realized it clearly wasn't in. Definitely a miscue in a bad situation there."
Philadelphia managed to hang on and avoid its third consecutive loss. It was just more of the same for the Braves, who own the major league's worst road record at 4-14.
Tom Glavine (0-1, 4.03 ERA) will try to end that trend and pick up his elusive first win of the campaign.
The 42-year-old lefthander tossed seven innings during Friday's 3-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates, allowing two runs and five hits with four walks and three strikeouts en route to his third straight no decision.
The future Hall of Famer will be opposed by Brett Myers (2-3, 5.33), who is hoping to avoid his third straight loss.
Myers was roughed up for seven runs - six earned - and nine hits over five frames in an 8-3 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday.
