Mets RHP Pelfrey aims to end woes vs. Nationals

FLUSHING, New York (Ticker) - Mike Pelfrey takes the hill on Thursday as the New York Mets look to avoid a second straight loss to the lowly Washington Nationals in the finale of a four-game series.

The Mets, who have yet to win consecutive games this month, can't afford to look ahead to Friday's series opener against their cross-town rival New York Yankees. Especially the way the feisty Nationals have battled them.

Tim Redding threw six effective innings and Jesus Flores sparked a four-run seventh with an RBI single to lead the Nationals to a 5-3 victory on Wednesday.

If the Mets are to take some momentum into the "Subway Series" they will need Pelfrey (2-3, 4.86 ERA) to start living up to his first-round pick status. The 24-year-old righthander has lost three straight starts, allowing 12 runs and 26 hits in his last 16 1/3 innings.

The Nationals counter with Jason Bergmann (0-1, 11.68 ERA), who was recalled from Class AAA Columbus on Wednesday. The 26-year-old was optioned to Columbus on April 12 after allowing 16 runs in 12 1/3 innings.
