Santana gets start in "Subway Series"

May 16, 2008 - 1:08 PM NY Mets (20-19) at NY Yankees (20-22) 7:05 pm EDT

BRONX, New York (Ticker) - Johan Santana will get his first taste of the "Subway Series" when the New York Mets visit the New York Yankees on Friday in the opener a three-game interleague series.

The Mets' prize offseason acquisition, Santana (4-2, 3.10 ERA) enjoyed plenty of success against the Yankees during his tenure with the Minnesota Twins. He is 2-0 with a 2.66 ERA and 14 strikeouts in his only three starts against the Yankees during the previous three campaigns.

Santana yielded three runs and 10 hits with five strikeouts in his last outing - a 12-6 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday. The Mets have won the last five times the two-time Cy Young winner has taken the hill.

Both clubs, however, are limping into this series. The Mets are trying to avoid their third straight defeat, while the Yankees have lost six of their previous nine games and fallen into the cellar of the American League East Division.

The Yankees hope that Darrell Rasner (2-0, 3.00), seeking his third straight win, can help reverse their fortunes in this one.

Rasner tossed six frames, allowing just two runs and four hits in his 13th career start Saturday as the Yankees pulled out a 5-2 triumph over the Detroit Tigers.
