Sabathia gets start as Indians face Rangers
May 25, 2008 - 3:08 PM Texas (25-26) at Cleveland (23-26), 1:05 pm EDTCLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Now that the Cleveland Indians have ended their seven-game losing streak, they will attempt to provide the reigning American League Cy Young Award winner with some run support.
C.C. Sabathia takes the mound Sunday as the Cleveland Indians host the Texas Rangers in the rubber match of a three-game series.
Sabathia (3-6, 5.14 ERA) has posted a 1.66 ERA over his last six outings but is just 3-3 in that span.
A 19-game winner last season, the lefthander tossed seven solid innings Tuesday but received the loss, surrendering just two runs and seven hits with eight strikeouts in a 4-1 setback to the Chicago White Sox.
Despite a sub-par start to the season, Sabathia is still tied for the AL lead with 65 strikeouts. The 27-year-old ace will be opposed by rookie Doug Mathis (1-1, 10.13), who will be making his second career start.
Mathis was tagged for nine runs - six earned - over 2 1/3 innings during Tuesday's 11-4 loss to the Minnesota Twins.
Texas is looking for its fourth win in five games.
