Red Sox look to snap road skid at Mariners

May 26, 2008 - 1:35 PM Boston (31-22) at Seattle (18-33) 10:10 pm EDT

SEATTLE (Ticker) - The best home team in the majors, the Boston Red Sox will be attempting to snap a seven-game road losing streak when they visit the Seattle Mariners on Monday.

The Red Sox were swept by the Oakland Athletics over the weekend, dropping Sunday's game, 6-3. Boston managed just six runs in the three-game set.

The Red Sox are 21-5 this season at Fenway Park but just 10-17 on the road.

The Mariners could be just the team to break Boston out of its funk, as they have dropped six in a row and own the worst record in the American League.

A preseason favorite to contend for a playoff berth, Seattle has allowed a total of 61 runs during their latest skid and rank 25th in the majors in batting average while ranking last in the majors in team ERA at 4.96.

Boston will send Bartolo Colon (1-0, 3.60 ERA) to the mound looking to snap the slide. The portly righthander picked up a win in his first start with Boston on Wednesday, allowing two runs and six hits in five innings while striking out four and walking two in beating Kansas City.

Colon will be on a pitch count Monday as he stretches out for regular turns in the rotation. He threw 74 pitches on Wednesday and likely will not be pushed past 90 on Monday.

The Mariners will counter with Felix Hernandez (2-4, 3.34). The 22-year-old righthander has not won since April 16 but is 2-0 with a 2.91 ERA in three career starts against the Red Sox.
