Rays look to roll again at Tropicana Field
May 27, 2008 - 11:49 AM Texas (26-27) at Tampa Bay (31-20) 7:10 pm EDTST. PETERSBURG, Florida (Ticker) - The Tampa Bay Rays will look to continue their winning ways at home when the host the Texas Rangers in the second of a three-game series on Tuesday.
In Monday's opener, Scott Kazmir struck out 10 batters and Eric Hinske recorded his ninth homer to lift the Rays to an easy 7-3 victory over the Rangers.
The win marked the fourth straight for Tampa Bay and was the 16th victory in 17 games at Tropicana Field for the club. The Rays became the first team in modern baseball history (since 1900) to own the best record through Memorial Day after posting the worst mark the season before.
"I don't even know what to say about (the best record in baseball)," Rays right fielder Carl Crawford said. "That's just something I always dreamed about. We just want to try to keep it going."
The Rays hand the ball to Andy Sonnanstine (6-2, 5.09 ERA), who is looking to get back on track after suffering one of his worst outings of the season. He was tagged for seven runs and nine hits in six innings of a 9-1 loss at Oakland on Wednesday.
The righthander has faced Texas just once, giving up five runs in 4 1/3 frames during a 7-4 setback on August 10.
Vicente Padilla (6-2, 3.33) counters for the Rangers. Padilla has perhaps been the most effective in the rotation recently, posting a 4-0 record over his last six starts.
The 30-year-old hasn't had the best of luck when facing Tampa Bay, going 0-2 with a dismal 10.13 ERA through three career appearances - two starts.
