Nationals eye rare series win vs. Padres
May 29, 2008 - 1:39 PM Washington (23-31) at San Diego (20-34) 3:35 p.m. EDTSAN DIEGO (Ticker) -- The Washington Nationals will attempt to win their first-ever series in Petco Park as they close out a three-game set with the San Diego Padres on Thursday.
Washington hasn't won a road series in San Diego since August 17-19, 2001 - when the team was still based in Montreal. Since the Padres moved into Petco Park, the Nationals are just 4-11 there.
However, Washington collected a rare win in Wednesday's 6-4 triumph as Jesus Flores hit his first career grand slam.
In the finale, the Nationals will turn to John Lannan (4-5, 3.57 ERA), who has alternated wins and losses over his last five outings. In Saturday's 5-2 setback against the Milwaukee Brewers, the lefthander permitted three runs and five hits over five innings, striking out four.
The Padres will counter with Wilfredo Ledezma (0-2, 4.65), who makes his third start in place of injured ace Jake Peavy. The lefthander allowed five runs and five hits over just three frames during Saturday's 7-2 setback to the Cincinnati Reds.
