Harden, A's open series with Tigers

OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- Rich Harden looks to continue his strong start to the season when he takes the mound for the Oakland Athletics, who open up a three-game series with the Detroit Tigers on Monday.

The oft-injured Harden (3-0, 2.60 ERA) has allowed one run or less in four of his six starts this season. Due mainly to shoulder issues, the righthander had made just 13 starts over the previous two seasons combined.

Harden did not factor in the decision in his last start on Wednesday despite yielding just one run and five hits over five innings, striking out five against Toronto. Oakland ended up losing, 2-1.

Opposing Harden will be Detroit veteran Kenny Rogers (4-4, 5.88), who is 21-7 lifetime against the A's.

Despite not factoring in the decision, Rogers is coming off his best start of the season, pitching seven scoreless innings in Detroit's 1-0 loss to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim last Monday. It was the longest outing of the season for the 43-year-old lefthander.

Oakland snapped a four-game losing streak with a 13-8 victory at Texas on Sunday as Jack Cust and Mark Ellis homered during a nine-run seventh inning.

Detroit won two out of three at Seattle over the weekend, including a 7-5 triumph on Sunday.
