Bruce looks to continue tear at Phillies

Jun 2, 2008 - 2:03 PM Cincinnati (28-29) at Philadelphia (33-25) 7:05 pm EDT

PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- So far, rookie Jay Bruce has lived up to his grand billing.

Bruce brings his hot bat when the Cincinnati Reds open a three-game series at the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday.

The 21-year-old Bruce has been a major force since being called up from the minor leagues on Tuesday, including a game-winning homer in the 10th inning to gave the Reds an 8-7 victory over Atlanta on Saturday.

The center fielder is 13-for-22 with two homers, six RBI, two steals and six walks over his first six games in the big leagues.

"Boy, if he's living a dream, I'd like to get in that dream," Reds manager Dusty Baker said. "Everybody said he was good. Sometimes guys get overhyped. Most times, you're disappointed at first. This hype is real."

Reds veteran Ken Griffey Jr. could steal the spotlight as he just one homer shy of 600.

The 1997 American League MVP, Griffey moved within a home run of becoming the sixth player to reach that milestone with a two-run shot on Saturday. The right fielder had two hits, including a double, in Sunday's 6-2 win.

Bronson Arroyo (4-4, 5.29 ERA) takes the ball for Cincinnati, which has won five of its last six games. Arroyo has captured his pervious two starts - including a one-run effort against Pittsburgh on Thursday.

The righthander is just 1-4 for his career when facing Philadelphia in seven appearances.

The Phillies counter with Kyle Kendrick (4-2, 4.84), who has not lost in two lifetime starts against Cincinnati. Most recently, Kendrick gave up four runs in an 8-4 victory over the Reds in his season debut on April 4.
