Smoltz hopes to redeem himself vs. Marlins
Jun 3, 2008 - 12:15 PM Florida (31-25) at Atlanta (30-28) 7:10 pm EDTATLANTA (Ticker) - John Smoltz second go-round as the Atlanta Braves closer did not go according to plan.
Smoltz hopes his teammates put him in position for another chance on Tuesday as the Braves continue a three-game series with the Florida Marlins.
The 41-year-old Smoltz was activated from the disabled list on Monday, but blew his first save chance since 2004 when Jeremy Hermida hit a two-run single in the ninth.
Yunel Escobar bailed out Smoltz with a game-winning two-run homer in the 10th inning to give the Braves a 7-5 win. Smoltz, who is the only pitcher with 200 career wins and 150 saves, is surely eager for another chance.
"I'm glad we're talking about a win," said Smoltz, who saved 154 games as Atlanta's closer from 2001-2004. "It wasn't in my script, (but) we won the game."
The way Jorge Campillo (2-0, 0.99 ERA) has been pitching, Smoltz may get his chance for redemption right away. A converted reliever, Campillo has allowed just one run in his first 15 innings since being moved to the rotation.
Rookie Burke Badenhop (1-3, 6.75) gets the ball for Florida. Badenhop was scheduled to pitch on May 24 vs. San Francisco, but was skipped due to a rainout. The 25-year-old righthander allowed six runs - five earned - and seven hits in three innings of a 9-3 loss to Kansas City on May 18.
