Verlander, Tigers open series with Indians
Jun 6, 2008 - 12:44 PM Cleveland (27-33) at Detroit (24-35) 7:05 pm EDTDETROIT (Ticker) -- Justin Verlander hopes to get the slumping Detroit Tigers back on track when they open a four-game series against the Cleveland Indians on Friday.
Verlander (2-8, 5.16 ERA) didn't fare so well in his first start against Cleveland, which scored five times off the righthander in an 11-1 win on April 17. He owns a 3-6 record through 10 career starts in the series.
The 25-year-old Verlander stumbled in his last outing, giving up four runs and eight hits in seven frames of a 5-0 loss at Seattle last Saturday.
Cleveland hands the ball to Paul Byrd (2-5, 4.66), who has had his way with the Tigers throughout his career. The righthander is 8-2 with a 3.55 ERA in 17 lifetime appearances against the club.
Byrd hopes to bounce back from his last start at Kansas City, where he was rocked for six runs and nine hits in just 4 1/3 innings on Monday. He is 0-5 away from Progressive Field this season.
The Indians scored 34 runs during their four-game split against the Texas Rangers, where as, the Tigers were swept on the road by the Oakland Athletics.
