After seizing first place, Red Sox host Mariners
Jun 6, 2008 - 12:47 PM Seattle (21-39) at Boston (38-25) 7:05 p.m. EDTBOSTON (Ticker) -- After grabbing control of the American League East, the Boston Red Sox look to increase their lead atop the division when they host the lowly Seattle Mariners in the opener of a three-game series on Friday.
The Red Sox earned their 13th straight home victory on Thursday, completing a three-game sweep of the Tampa Bay Rays with a 7-1 drubbing in the series finale.
Despite the win - which involved a bench-clearing brawl after Red Sox center fielder Coco Crisp was hit with a pitch by Rays starter James Shields - there appeared to be a rift in the Boston dugout as Manny Ramirez slapped Kevin Youkilis with a backhand before both players were separated by coaches and players.
Neither player spoke with media following the game but Red Sox manager Terry Francona said only that the two "were just exchanging some views on things."
The Mariners hope a possible divide in the Boston clubhouse carries over to Friday when they try to snap four-game losing streak.
Seattle (21-39) owns the worst record in the majors despite the ninth highest payroll and turn to righthander Felix Hernandez (3-5, 3.29 ERA) to end their slump.
The Mariners' ace will be opposed by Bartolo Colon (3-0, 3.50), who has won all three of his starts for the Red Sox this season, allowing eight runs in 18 innings with 13 strikeouts.
