Royals face Diamondbacks in rubber match

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- The Kansas City Royals hope to build off their best offensive performance of the season when they meet the Arizona Diamondbacks in the rubber match of a three-game interleague series.

The Royals received a huge boost from rookie Mike Aviles in Saturday's 12-3 drubbing of the Diamondbacks.

Entering the contest with just nine career hits in 31 at-bats, Aviles delivered a career-high four hits, including his second career homer. He also collected two doubles, two RBI and scored four runs.

John Buck and David DeJesus also homered for Kansas City, which recorded a season-best 12 runs and 17 hits.

Micah Owings (6-4, 4.72 ERA) will hope to fare better than his teammate and future Hall of Famer Randy Johnson did. The righthander is hoping to avoid his third straight loss.

Owings did not receive a decision in Tuesday's 9-5 triumph over the New York Mets. He surrendered five runs - four earned - and eight hits with three walks and two strikeouts over 4 1/3 frames.

Royals starter Gil Meche (3-8, 5.25) is seeking his first win since May 15. The righthander is also coming off a no decision, allowing a run and four hits over six innings during Tuesday's 6-5 setback to the Texas Rangers.
