Lowly Mariners hope to end skid vs. Marlins

Jun 16, 2008 - 1:27 PM Florida (37-32) at Seattle (24-45), 10:10 pm EDT

MIAMI (Ticker) -- The Seattle Mariners have not enjoyed interleague play much, either.

Owners of the worst record in the majors, the Mariners will attempt to avoid a fourth consecutive loss Monday when they host the Florida Marlins in the opener of a three-game series.

Seattle was swept by the Washington Nationals this weekend, getting outscored by an 18-10 margin against the National League East's last-place team.

Mariners starter Carlos Silva (3-7, 5.79 ERA) will try to snap a seven-game losing streak and pick up his first win since April 17. The Venezuelan righthander is 0-7 with an 8.79 ERA over eight starts since the beginning of May.

Silva yielded three runs and nine hits with no walks and three strikeouts over seven frames in Tuesday's 3-1 setback to the Toronto Blue Jays.

The Marlins just ended a three-game losing streak, posting a 9-3 triumph over the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday.

"We swung the bats pretty well," Florida's Mike Jacobs said. "Hopefully this gets us going in our next two cities (series at Seattle and Oakland)."

Andrew Miller (4-5, 5.22) will take the hill for the Marlins, seeking his first win since May 22. The 23-year-old lefthander is coming off a no decision in Tuesday's 6-2 win over the Philadelphia Phillies, allowing a run and four hits with seven strikeouts over seven innings.
