Pineiro, Cardinals want to continue streak, face Royals
Jun 17, 2008 - 2:52 PM KANSAS CITY (28-42) at ST LOUIS (42-29), 8:15 pm EDTST. LOUIS (Ticker) -- The injury-riddled St. Louis Cardinals look for some relief against a familiar interleague foe.
Joel Pineiro and the Cardinals aim for their third straight victory when they face the Kansas City Royals.
After being routed, 20-2 in Friday's debacle against Philadelphia, St. Louis took the next two vs. the Phillies to win for the sixth time in the last eight games.
The Cardinals won Sunday's 10-inning game, 7-6, but lost catcher Yadier Molina was run over on a tag play in the ninth. Molina sustained a mild concussion, and his status for this series is uncertain.
The absence of Molina just adds on to the loss of All-Star Albert Pujols , who has missed the past five games due to a strained left calf. The Cardinals are 3-2 without Pujols.
Facing the lowly Royals, the injuries may not matter to Pineiro (2-3, 4.41 ERA) and St. Louis as the home team has either won or tied the season series against Kansas City for the past six seasons. The 29-year-old righthander, who hasn't won a game since April 29, is 4-1 in nine career appearances - five starts - against the Royals.
Kansas City counters with Kyle Davies (2-0, 1.53 ERA), who is making his fourth start of the season. The righthander was in line for a third consecutive win after he yielded one run in six innings vs. Texas last Wednesday. However, the Royals bullpen surrendered 10 runs over the next three frames in the 11-5 loss.
Kansas City, which is tied for the second worst record in the majors, has won two of three.
