Reds' Thompson to make MLB debut vs. Yankees

BRONX, New York (Ticker) -- Daryl Thompson's first taste of the majors will be against one of the most talented lineups in baseball and in one of the most historic ballparks.

Thompson will make his major league debut Saturday as the Cincinnati Reds face the New York Yankees in the middle contest of a three-game interleague series at Yankee Stadium.

The 22-year-old Thompson, who was acquired when the Reds sent Austin Kearns and Felipe Lopez to the Washington Nationals in 2006, went 3-0 with a 3.25 ERA in four starts for Class AAA Louisville.

Thompson will have his hands full against the Yankees, who scored 45 runs over their seven-game winning streak before suffering a 4-2 loss to the Reds on Friday.

New York, however, will not be sending that much experience to the mound either. Dan Giese (1-1, 1.23 ERA) will make his first career start after making three relief appearances with the club.

The 31-year-old rookie will be the short-term replacement for Yankees ace Chien-Ming Wang, who will be out until September with a foot injury.
