Mets eye third straight win

Jun 21, 2008 - 1:50 PM DENVER (Ticker) -- The New York Mets attempt to post a third consecutive victory under interim manager Jerry Manuel when they visit the Colorado Rockies on Saturday.

The Mets have been somewhat of a circus recently, with manager Willie Randolph being fired after Monday's game at Anaheim and some light sparring going on between him and the club in the media since.

Yet the Mets' players are apparently blocking out the distraction.

The team took the series opener, 7-2, on Friday as John Maine pitched 6 2/3 strong innings and Carlos Delgado highlighted a five-run second inning with a two-run homer.

Friday's victory followed a rousing come-from-behind win in Wednesday's series finale against the Angels. In that dramatic triumph, David Wright singled in the tying run off closer Francisco Rodriguez in the ninth and Damion Easley homered in the tenth to give Manuel his first win as Mets manager.

Pedro Martinez (2-0, 5.31 ERA) will take the mound for New York on Saturday. The veteran righthander is coming off his best outing of the season on Sunday, when he allowed two runs - one earned - and six hits in six innings to earn a win against Texas.

Martinez is 1-1 with a 3.70 ERA in three career starts at Coors Field, traditionally a hitter's park

The Rockies will counter with righthander Ubaldo Jimenez (1-7, 4.85). The 24-year-old flame-thrower has not earned a win since April 7 despite allowing three earned runs or less 10 times in his last 13 starts.

Jimenez allowed three runs - two earned - in five innings but suffered a loss against Atlanta last Monday.
