Surprising Marlins, Rays clash again
Jun 24, 2008 - 12:37 PM Tampa Bay Rays (44-31) at Florida Marlins (40-35), 7:10 pm EDTMIAMI (Ticker) -- The Sunshine State's interleague battle is a bit hotter than people would've thought coming into the season.
The Florida Marlins and Tampa Bay Rays will look to show off their surprising assets as the two contenders square off for a three-game set at Dolphins Stadium beginning Tuesday.
The Marlins had their hands full with Justin Duchscherer in a loss to the Oakland Athletics on Sunday, and things won't get any easier against another surprising pitcher, Andy Sonnanstine (8-3,4.92 ERA).
The righthander will take the ball for the Rays, who lead the American League Wild Card race and have stunned many with their success after posting the worst record in the AL last season.
Sonnanstine has thrown at least five innings in every start but one, which came on April 14 against the New York Yankees. He also hasn't surrendered more than three runs in an outing since May 24.
Florida, which had the second-worst mark in the National League in 2007, will hand Scott Olsen (4-4, 3.51) the ball with hopes of maintaining its solid position in both the Wild Card and National League East Division races.
On June 13, the teams met at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg and the Marlins dropped the first two games before Ricky Nolasco threw 8 2/3 brilliant innings to help them defeat the Rays in the third.
Florida's Hanley Ramirez is 9-for-25 in the past six games and has 16 home runs and 19 stolen bases this season.
Tampa Bay's offense is paced by Carl Crawford, who is 10-for-23 during his current six-game hitting streak.
