Final/12
Mets Perez seeks second straight solid effort
Jul 6, 2008 - 1:00 PM Ny Mets (43-44) at Philadelphia (48-40) 1:35 pm. EDTPHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- Oliver Perez has been maddeningly inconsistent. Coming off a dominant performance, Perez takes the hill on Sunday as the New York Mets continue a four-game series with the Philadelphia Phillies.
Brian Schneider snapped a tie with a pinch-hit, two-run double in the eighth inning as New York notched a 9-4 victory on Saturday.
Perez (6-5, 4.98 ERA) has an extra two days' of rest after limiting the New York Yankees to one run and three hits in seven innings of a 3-1 win last Sunday. The lefthander was held back from his scheduled start on Friday in order to keep ace Johan Santana on regular rest.
Maybe the most important stat from Perez's last start is the zero in the walks column. Perez is third in the National League with 52 walks, which is the main reason for his inconsistency. The erratic Perez will look for a second solid start against the Phillies, whom he beat by throwing 5 2/3 scoreless innings on April 19.
Philadelphia, which had its four-game winning streak snapped Saturday, sends righthander Kyle Kendrick (8-3, 4.58). The 23-year-old has allowed just three runs over his last 14 innings in wiinning his last two starts.
