Clement, Mariners eyeing third straight win
Jul 6, 2008 - 1:14 PM Detroit (43-44) at Seattle (35-52), 4:10 pm EDTSEATTLE (Ticker) -- Rookie Jeff Clement will try to build off a career night as the Seattle Mariners seek their third straight win against the Detroit Tigers on Sunday.
Clement had the best game of his young career Saturday night, blasting a pair of home runs to lead the Mariners to a 3-2 victory.
Trailing 2-0, Seattle started the comeback in the sixth inning when Clement halved the deficit with a solo home run. The 24-year-old catcher struck again in the eighth, delivering the go-ahead two-run blast.
Optioned from Class AAA Tacoma on May 19, Clement has struggled since being recalled. Despite the excellent performance Saturday, Clement is batting just .185 with four home runs and nine RBI on the campaign.
Detroit starter Nate Robertson (6-7, 5.56 ERA) will hope to contain Clement and the rest of the Mariners' offense. The lefthander was roughed up for six runs and 11 hits over four frames in Tuesday's 6-4 loss to the Minnesota Twins.
He will be opposed by lefthander Ryan Rowland-Smith (2-1, 3.05), who is making just his second career start.
