Sabathia aims to rebound from rare poor outing
Aug 2, 2008 - 10:28 AM Milwaukee (61-49) at Atlanta (50-59) 3:55 pm. EDTATLANTA (Ticker) -- CC Sabathia aims to rebound from his first poor performance as a Brewer and Milwaukee tries to match a franchise record with its ninth straight road win against the injury-plagued Atlanta Braves on Saturday.
The reigning American League Cy Young Award winner, Sabathia (4-0, 1.82 ERA) won his first four starts with Milwaukee, including three straight complete games, before being brought down to earth on by the National League Central-leading Chicago Cubs on Monday. The burly lefthander allowed four runs - three earned - and nine hits in 6 2/3 innings of a 6-4 loss.
Sabathia, who was acquired from Cleveland on July 7, will try and lead the Brewers to their longest road winning streak since they were in his former league. Milwaukee, which trails the Cubs (65-45) by four games, has not won nine straight away from home since June 8-17, 1973.
Sabathia should receive plenty of support . The Brewers have outscored their opponents, 50-19, during their current road winning streak. Prince Fielder and Mike Cameron each homered as Milwaukee opened this six-game road trip with a 9-0 victory on Friday.
Meanwhile, Atlanta, which placed third baseman Chipper Jones and ace Tim Hudson on the disabled list Monday, has lost six of seven.
Rookie Charlie Morton (2-4, 7.26) gets the ball for the Braves. Morton was recalled from Class AAA Richmond on Monday to take the place of Hudson. The 24-year-old righthander started that night, and was tagged for eight runs and seven hits in 3 2/3 innings of a 12-3 loss to St. Louis.
