Shields, Rays attempt to continue home dominance
Aug 3, 2008 - 3:13 PM Detroit (55-55) at Tampa Bay (65-44) 1:40 pm EDTST. PETERSBURG, Florida (Ticker) -- The Tampa Bay Rays have the majors' best home team. They can credit a lot of that to James Shields.
Shields eyes his fifth home win in as many starts on Sunday as the Rays attempt to complete a sweep of the Detroit Tigers.
Tampa Bay, which is a league-best 42-16 at Tropicana Field, has won 38 of its last 47 home games.
While they can thank many players for their part in that success, the Rays need look no further than Shields (9-7, 3.66 ERA), who is 7-1 with a 2.16 ERA in 12 home starts. Overall, Tampa Bay has won 11 of them.
Another win by Shields - who took the loss in Monday's 3-1 road setback to Toronto after surrendering three runs and five hits over 7 1/3 innings - would allow Tampa Bay to match last season's win total of 70 with 52 games remaining.
Standing in his way will be rookie Armando Galarraga (9-4, 3.36), who will attempt to win his third straight start. The righthander, who is 7-2 with a 2.60 ERA in 11 road starts in 2008, allowed three runs and five hits over 5 1/3 frames in Tuesday's 8-5 win at Cleveland.
