Rays looking to clinch first over-.500 season

ST. PETERSBURG, Florida (Ticker) -- The Tampa Bay Rays will look to achieve a franchise first on Friday - guaranteeing themselves an above-.500 finish.

The Rays will attempt to win their 82nd game when they open a series against the Baltimore Orioles.

Tampa Bay has won 11 more games than it had in any of its first 10 years, and clinched at least a .500 finish with a 3-2 win over the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday. Cliff Floyd homered and drove in a pair and Willy Aybar hit a solo blast in the win.

The Rays own a 4 1/2-game edge over the Boston Red Sox (77-56) in the American League East and and lead the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (81-52) by one-half game for the best record in the AL.

Ace Scott Kazmir (9-6, 3.27 ERA) will be on the mound as Tampa Bay takes its first shot. The 24-year-old lefthander has not lasted longer than six innings in any of his last six starts, going 1-1 with a 4.65 ERA over that span.

Kazmir has yet to face the Orioles this season, but owns a 4-3 career mark with a 4.70 ERA against them in his career.

Baltimore will counter with its ace, Jeremy Guthrie (10-10, 3.28). The righthander has taken the loss in each of his last two starts, combining to allow seven runs in 13 2/3 frames against Boston and New York.

Guthrie has faced the Rays three times this season, going 0-2 while allowing nine runs in 18 1/3 innings.
