Indians target beginning of another long winning streak
Aug 30, 2008 - 10:10 AM Seattle (51-83) at Cleveland (65-68) 3:55 pm EDTCLEVELAND (Ticker) -- The Cleveland Indians' 10-game winning streak came to an abrupt halt with a loss on Friday to the Seattle Mariners - a result they don't expect to happen again one day later with Anthony Reyes pitching the way he has lately.
Reyes looks to put together his fifth consecutive strong pitching performance on Saturday when the Indians host the Mariners.
Cleveland, which had been unable to string together anything more than a four-game winning streak in 2008 after pushing eventual World Series champion Boston to seven games in last season's American League Championship Series, reeled off 10 straight victories until Seattle scored a series-opening 3-2 victory.
Despite the defeat, the Indians are 24-15 since the All-Star break after going 41-53 in the season's first half.
Reyes (2-1, 2.22 ERA) has certainly played a role in the turnaround since his acquisition from the St. Louis Cardinals on July 26, yielding no more than two runs in any of his four outings with his new team.
Included in that stretch was his longest start with the Indians, when he allowed one run and four hits over seven innings but did not factor into the decision in Sunday's 4-3 victory at Texas.
Seattle has won five of its last seven, but Jarrod Washburn (5-14, 4.93) has not been able to personally enjoy any of that success. The lefthander was saddled with his fifth loss in as many starts in last Saturday's 5-1 setback vs. Oakland after he permitted three runs and seven hits over six frames.
