Marlins look to rebound against Mets
Aug 30, 2008 - 10:17 AM NY Mets (75-60) at Florida (68-67) 7:10 p.m. EDTMIAMI (Ticker) -- One strike away from a key division win, the Florida Marlins had a victory snatched away by Carlos Beltran's grand slam.
With hopes of a push towards the top of the National League East standings fading, the Marlins will look to rebound when they take on the New York Mets on Saturday.
With a 2-1 lead, two outs in the ninth and an 0-2 count on Luis Castillo, the result of Friday's game seemed a forgone conclusion. But four batters late, the Mets had a 5-2 lead and, after a spirited rally saw the Marlins get the winning run to second base, New York held on to a 5-4 win.
The loss dropped Florida seven games behind the front-running Mets. They will face a familiar foe when Mike Pelfrey (13-8, 3.70) takes the hill for the Mets.
New York's leader in wins this season, Pelfrey has stumped much of the NL but not the Marlins. The tall righthander is 0-3 with a 10.66 ERA in three starts against Florida. Each of his last three losses have come against the Marlins, with his last loss against another team coming on May 21 against the Atlanta Braves.
Pelfrey, 24, has been brilliant, pitching consecutive complete games in his last two starts. He allowed one run and six hits, striking out six without issuing a walk in New York's 9-1 over the Houston Astros on August 25.
The Marlins counter with their own talented righthander, Ricky Nolasco (13-7, 3.62). The 25-year-old, who leads the Marlins in wins, will be making his fourth start against the NL East leaders.
Last time out against New York, Nolasco surrendered three runs, seven hits and two walks in the Marlins' 3-0 loss on August 8.
