Pedroia, Red Sox aim for sweep of White Sox

BOSTON (Ticker) -- Dustin Pedroia has worked his way to the top of the leader board in the American League in a few offensive categories. Now he'll try to lead the Boston Red Sox to a playoff berth.

Pedroia will be looking to build on his perfect series when the Red Sox go for a sweep of the Chicago White Sox on Sunday.

The All-Star second baseman has gone 8-for-8 in the series, even batting out of the cleanup spot on Saturday with Kevin Youkilis out with the flu. Pedroia's surge has moved him into first place in the AL in batting average, runs, multi-hit games and hits.

Boston sits 4 1/2 games behind the Tampa Bay Rays (83-51) in the AL East and 3 1/2 games ahead of the Minnesota Twins (76-60) in the wild-card race.

The White Sox sit one-half game ahead of the Twins in the AL Central.

Tim Wakefield (8-8, 3.73 ERA) will take the ball for the Red Sox. The veteran knuckleballer returned from a stint on the disabled list Tuesday at New York and earned a win by allowing three runs in five innings.

Chicago will counter with righthander Gavin Floyd (14-6, 3.70). The 25-year-old has not suffered a loss since July 19, going 4-0 over his last six starts.

Floyd earned a win against Boston on August 10 despite allowing five runs and seven hits in 5 1/3 innings.
