Cardinals hope to avoid first road sweep of season

Aug 31, 2008 - 9:21 AM St. Louis (74-62) at Houston (70-66) 2:05 pm EDT

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- Not even a red-hot Albert Pujols has been able to snap the St. Louis Cardinals out of their recent road funk.

Pujols will look to continue his torrid hitting on Sunday as the Cardinals try to avoid their first road sweep of the season against the Houston Astros.

The 2005 National League MVP has been on fire over the last 12 games, batting .532 (25-for-47) with five homers and 14 RBI. However, St. Louis is only 6-6.

In addition, the NL's best road team at 37-31 has dropped three straight on the road - including the first two games of this set - and are in danger of posting their longest road losing streak since an 11-game skid from August 29-September 25, 2007.

To avoid their first road sweep, the Cardinals will turn to Todd Wellemeyer (11-5, 3.87 ERA), who saw his three-game winning streak snapped in Tuesday's 12-0 loss to Milwaukee. The righthander surrendered five runs - four earned - and eight hits over six innings.

The Astros will respond with Wandy Rodriguez (7-6, 3.94), who has yet to beat the Cardinals in four tries, going 0-2 despite an 1.45 ERA.

The lefthander avoided his third straight loss on Tuesday, but was left with a no-decision despite striking out a career-high 10, allowing one run and three hits in a 2-1 loss to Cincinnati.
