Sheets, Peavy sqaure off when Brewers face Padres
Sep 6, 2008 - 10:25 AM San Diego (54-87) at Milwaukee (81-60) 7:05 p.m. EDTMILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- The Milwaukee Brewers have had a tough time finding wins. The San Diego Padres seem to be the team to break them out of their funk.
The Brewers snapped a four-game slide on Friday with a 3-2 win in 11 innings when J.J. Hardy singled home the game-winning run. CC Sabathia allowed one run in seven innings before Eric Gagne coughed up the lead, but the extra-inning rally ended the skid.
Milwaukee owns a four-game lead over the Philadelphia Phillies (77-64) in the National League wild-card race and has pulled within four games of the Chicago Cubs (85-56) in the NL Central.
The Padres are looking to avoid having the worst record in the major leagues, as they currently hold a one-half game edge over the Washington Nationals (54-88).
The Brewers will send All-Star Game starter Ben Sheets (12-7, 2.97 ERA) to the mound. The righthander has not allowed a run in either of his last two starts, giving up a total of seven hits against the Cardinals and the Mets.
Sheets left his start against New York after five innings with tightness in his groin, but has been cleared to go.
The Padres will counter with reigning NL Cy Young Award winner Jake Peavy (9-9, 2.69). The righthander struck out 13 in eight scoreless innings against the Colorado Rockies on Sunday but did not factor in the decision. He ranks second in the NL in ERA.
