Fielder, Sheets lift Brewers past Padres
Sep 7, 2008 - 3:31 AM By Brad Hartmann PA SportsTicker Contributing WriterMILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- Prince Fielder's RBI double and a stellar performance on the mound by Ben Sheets was all the Milwaukee Brewers needed as they defeated the San Diego Padres 1-0, Saturday evening at Miller Park.
For the third time this season, Sheets (13-7) pitched a complete-game shutout and posted his career-best 13th win of the season.
Conversely, Jake Peavy (9-10) gave it his all for his 19th quality start of the year, allowing one run on five hits, walking four and striking out five in seven innings.
"Winning a one-run game doesn't happen a lot," Sheets said. "Our offense is very capable of getting to great pitchers. I will never doubt them that we won't score any runs. It's not easy. You want to go out there and finish it, but sometimes you try to be too perfect and it could hurt you."
The Brewers (82-60) got their lone run in the bottom of the third. A two-out infield single by Ryan Braun set up Fielder, who doubled to right field and with an error by second baseman Matt Antonelli allowed Braun to score.
"I was trying to hit it and get it in the outfield," Fielder said. "The run was the biggest play of the game. Not only that defensively we had to be on our toes and be able to make the big plays."
For Sheets, this marks his 20th consecutive inning that he hasn't allowed a run.. However Sheets did receive a scare in the bottom of the second as he grounded out to Peavy, Sheets felt a stinger in his hand moments later, but he was fine.
"Peavy threw him a slider that hit the end of the bat," Brewers manager Ned Yost said. "If you ever played baseball and got one of those stingers in your fingers, it hurts so bad in your fingers. It makes you want to throw up. His hand was totally numb. It took him a few throws to get his feeling back that's the only problem he had tonight."
Heading into the ninth, Yost gambled by allowing Sheets to continue, giving his bullpen a much needed day off.
"His pitch count was down," he said. "It was like win it or lose it. You are in a tough spot pitching-wise. I had Salomon Torres ready to go if needed."
Earlier in the year, Peavy and Sheets matched up with the Padres hurler earning his ninth win in San Diego's 3-2 victory.
"It was a pitching duel when Benny and Peavy matchup there," Yost said. "We finally scored a run in the seventh. Benny went out and they scored three off him and he didn't let it happen to him again tonight."
