Rays trying to hold on in AL East, face surging Blue Jays
Sep 6, 2008 - 10:23 AM Tampa Bay (85-54) at Toronto (74-66) 1:07 p.m. EDTTORONTO (Ticker) -- With their division lead dwindling, the Tampa Bay Rays are battling the American League's hottest club.
The Rays meet the Toronto Blue Jays, who have won six consecutive games, on Saturday.
Tampa Bay, which has lost three of four, owns a 2 1/2-game lead on the Boston Red Sox in the American League East. The Rays travel to Fenway for a three-game set against the Red Sox after this series is over.
Alex Rios blasted a pair of home runs in Friday's series opener, leading the Blue Jays to a 6-4 triump. Rios is batting .296 with 67 RBI.
Rays starter James Shields (12-8, 3.66 ERA) hopes to shut down Rios and the rest of Toronto's red-hot offense. The righthander tossed seven frames in Sunday's 10-4 win over the Baltimore Orioles, yielding a run and six hits.
The Blue Jays, who have scored 40 runs over their current winning streak, will send righthander Shaun Marcum (8-6, 3.60) to the mound. Marcum is making his first start since being sent to the minors on August 23.
