Struggling Diamondbacks slipping in playoff race
Sep 10, 2008 - 10:11 AM Arizona (71-73) at San Francisco (64-80) 3:45 p.m. EDTSAN FRANCISCO (Ticker) -- The Arizona Diamondbacks are running out of steam and it may cost them a postseason spot.
The Diamondbacks try to snap their five-game losing streak on Wednesday when they battle the San Francisco Giants.
Arizona has lost 13 of its last 17 games, including each of the previous nine on the road. The slide has dropped the Diamondbacks 2 1/2 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers (74-71) for first place in the National League West.
Offense has been the biggest problem. Arizona has scored three runs or more twice in the last five games. The Diamondbacks had scored two runs on Tuesday before Chris Snyder launched his 15th home run - a two-run blast - to tie the score in the eighth inning.
The homer wasn't enough, however, as Eugenio Velez plated the game-winning run in the ninth to lift the Giants to a 5-4 victory.
Dan Haren (14-8, 3.41 ERA) hopes to end the Diamondbacks' futility. Haren has lost each of his last two outings, allowing 10 runs and 16 hits in 10 innings. But, Arizona has scored only two runs total in those games.
Brad Hennessey (1-1, 12.46), who was recalled from Class AAA Fresno on Monday, counters. Hennessey takes the place of the struggling Kevin Correia after the righthander lost three of his last four decisions and surrendered nine runs in 10 1/3 innings.
