Brewers hopes matchup with Pirates aides playoff push
Sep 23, 2008 - 1:42 PM Pittsbugh (65-91) at Milwaukee (85-71) 8:05 pm. EDTMILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- The struggling Milwaukee Brewers hope a series against Pittsburgh Pirates can help them move closer to securing their first playoff appearance in 26 years.
Dave Bush takes the hill as the Brewers aim for their 10th straight victory over the Pirates on Tuesday.
Milwaukee, which has not reached the postseason since 1982, trails the New York Mets (86-70) by one game in the National League wild card race despite losing 15 of 20 games in September.
Milwaukee posted an 8-1 victory over Cincinnati on Sunday, its second win in six games since interim manager Dale Sveum took over for Ned Yost.
"The unfortunate part is, if you don't get in the playoffs, a (heck) of a season is thrown out the window," Sveum told the team's website.
The Brewers have fared well against Pittsburgh, winning 11 of the 12 meetings this season. Bush (9-10, 4.22 ERA) is 0-1 with a 4.88 ERA in his last four outings.
Pittsburgh counters with Jeff Karstens (2-6, 4.37), who has lost six straight starts.
