Padres-Diamondbacks Preview

May 26, 2009 - 2:10 AM By JEFF MEZYDLO STATS Senior Writer

San Diego (22-22) at Arizona (19-25), 9:40 p.m. EDT

Things are going so well for the San Diego Padres that they're even starting to win on the road.

Coming off their first road victory in almost a month, the Padres look to extend their winning streak to 11 games Tuesday night as they face the Arizona Diamondbacks.

San Diego (23-22) overcame a six-run deficit to beat Arizona 9-7 in 10 innings in Monday's series opener, snapping an 11-game road losing streak and moving over .500 for the first time since it was 11-10 on April 29.

The Padres, whose previous road victory came 4-3 at Colorado on April 28, are 6-16 away from home. They haven't won consecutive road contests since a three-game winning streak from April 16-18.

Chase Headley hit a two-run homer in the 10th, Drew Macias had a bases-loaded triple and Scott Hairston added three hits for San Diego, which has gone from last place to second in the NL West during its 10-game winning stretch.

"It's been a lot of fun to come to the ballpark these last 10 days," Headley said. "We come here and we expect to win. It's not that we come in here and hope to win, we expect to win. We just couldn't give up (Monday)."

The Padres, who entered this six-game road swing coming off a 9-0 homestand, are riding their longest win streak since a franchise-record 14-game run from June 18-July 2, 1999.

Adrian Gonzalez homered in his fifth straight road game for the Padres. He's hit 12 of his 17 homers away from home and is batting .364 (8 for 22) with six homers and nine RBIs during a six-game road hitting streak.

Hairston, batting .333 overall, is 6 for 14 (.429) with two RBIs in three games this season against Arizona, the team with which he spent his first 3 1/2 seasons.

San Diego is hitting .222 during its winning streak but has outscored opponents 44-23 while posting a 2.11 ERA.

Veteran Kevin Correia (1-2, 4.53 ERA), who starts Tuesday, earned his first victory in his first season with his hometown team to begin the Padres' current win streak. He threw seven strong innings in a 5-3 victory over Cincinnati on May 15.

He pitched well again Thursday but didn't get a win, allowing one run and six hits in 6 1-3 innings of a 3-2 victory over San Francisco.

Correia is 0-2 with a 4.30 ERA in four starts against the Diamondbacks (19-26), who counter with Max Scherzer.

Scherzer (1-3, 3.50) allowed three runs and six hits while striking out a season-high 10 in six innings, but didn't factor in Arizona's 4-3 win at Florida on Thursday. It was his fourth quality start in his last five outings.

The right-hander, who recorded his first career win at Atlanta on May 16, will face San Diego for the first time.

Rookie Gerardo Parra drove in two runs and Justin Upton had two hits with an RBI on Monday for Arizona, which has lost two straight after winning four in a row and six of seven.

"We just didn't find a way to finish the game," said Arizona manager A.J. Hinch, whose team allowed eight runs after the seventh inning.

Upton is hitting .325, and he's 9 for 19 (.474) with three homers and five RBIs in his last five games against the Padres. He is 3 for 9 with two doubles against Correia.

It's uncertain if Arizona second baseman Felipe Lopez, batting .323, will be in the lineup after missing two straight games with hamstring tightness.
