Conley's late buckets lead Grizzlies over Spurs
Apr 2, 2013 - 6:17 AMVideo
Conley, who had recorded a steal in a franchise-record 64 consecutive games coming in, tied the game on a 3-pointer with 30.7 seconds left, and after Tony Parker missed a contested jumper, Conley was again called upon with time winding down.
He drove left on the taller Danny Green, avoided a swipe from Parker and banked in the deciding bucket with sixth-tenths of a second remaining.
"He's constantly getting better," Grizzlies forward Zach Randolph said of Conley. "The sky's the limit for him."
Parker missed at the other end, though the shot was after the buzzer anyway, and Memphis celebrated its 12th straight home victory. The club also matched a franchise record with its 50th win of the season.
Conley finished with 23 points, while Jerryd Bayless added 17 off the bench for the Grizzlies, who still trail the Southwest Division-leading Spurs by five games with eight to play.
The Spurs announced Monday they will be without Manu Ginobili for up to four weeks with a strained right hamstring, while their starting frontcourt of Tim Duncan and Kawhi Leonard sat out to rest their sore left knees.
Parker scored 25 points in their absence as San Antonio saw its lead atop the Western Conference shrink to one game over the Oklahoma City Thunder.
The Spurs were beaten by the Heat on Sunday despite Miami sitting several of its stars, and nearly pulled the same trick a day later as they led the entire second half until the final second of regulation.
Parker sank two free throws for a 90-87 lead prior to Conley's heroics.
"I thought offensively we made a couple of mistakes at the very end of the game and Conley made a great shot. A lot of times in the NBA that is what does it, decisions down the stretch in the last couple of minutes," San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said.
The division foes played to a 21-21 tie in the first quarter, and the Spurs limited the Grizzlies to 16 points in the second to take a 44-37 lead into the break.
Gary Neal's runner in the lane at the third-quarter buzzer was waived off by instant replay, but the visitors still held a 68-62 advantage.
