Spurs seek bounce back in showdown with Grizzlies

Apr 1, 2013 - 2:29 PM (Sports Network) - The San Antonio Spurs lost a blockbuster matchup with the Miami Heat and will try to get back on track Monday night when they pay a visit to the Memphis Grizzlies at FedEx Forum.

The Spurs suffered an 88-86 loss to the defending champion Heat Sunday at home and are now just 1 1/2 games ahead of Oklahoma City for the West's top seed. Miami rested superstars LeBron James and Dwyane Wade, while San Antonio was paced by 17 points from both Tim Duncan and Kawhi Leonard.

Duncan grabbed 12 rebounds and Leonard added 11, while Tony Parker and Danny Green scored 12 points apiece for the Spurs, who had won two straight and six of seven games.

"They played great tonight," Leonard told NBA.com. "LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Mario Chalmers didn't play, but the guys stepped up tonight and their coach had them prepared and ready to play."

San Antonio will try to stop a two-game slide on the road and is 23-13 away from the Alamo City. The Spurs are six games ahead of Memphis for the Southwest Division lead.

Spurs guard Manu Ginobili missed Sunday's game with a hamstring injury and is questionable Monday night.

The Grizzlies will put their 11-game home winning streak on the line versus the Spurs and are coming off Saturday's 99-86 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Marc Gasol scored 21 points and Mike Conley netted 19 for Memphis, which is fifth in the West standings and received 14 points from Zach Randolph.

"I thought our defense kept us in the game. We held them to 36 points in the second half and really clamped down and took control of the game," Memphis coach Lionel Hollins said.

Memphis is second in the NBA in opponents' scoring, allowing 90.0 ppg. The Spurs are fourth in the league in scoring at 104.0 ppg.

The Grizzlies are 29-8 as the host and will start a three-game western road trip Wednesday against the Portland Trail Blazers.

Memphis has dropped two of three against the Spurs this season, including a lopsided 103-82 setback on Jan. 16 in the Alamo City. Duncan fueled San Antonio with 19 points, eight rebounds, five blocks and four assists as the Spurs improved to 15-5 in the past 20 in this series.

The Spurs, though, have lost three of five at FedEx Forum.
