Monroe guides Pistons over 76ers

Apr 16, 2013 - 3:15 AM Auburn Hills, MI (Sports Network) - Greg Monroe scored 27 points to go along with 16 rebounds and four assists and Will Bynum added 22 points and dished out six helpers as the Detroit Pistons downed the Philadelphia 76ers, 109-101, Monday at the Palace of Auburn Hills.

Kyle Singler chipped in 16 points and five rebounds, while Brandon Knight and Khris Middleton scored 12 and 10 points, respectively, for the Pistons, who tied a season-high with their fourth straight win.

Dorell Wright had 22 points and Evan Turner and Spencer Hawes each netted 13 points for the Sixers, who had a two-game winning streak come to an end.

Jrue Holiday and Thaddeus Young scored 14 and 11 points, respectively in defeat.

Trailing by 14 early in the fourth quarter, the Sixers closed the gap to nine around the midway point, but that's the closest they got. Andre Drummond made a layup and forced a steal one minute later which resulted in one made free throw to increase the hosts' edge to 12 with 5:12 remaining.

Rodney Stuckey's triple made it 103-90, all but allowing Detroit to hold on for the victory.

"We were doing some good things and then we started dribbling a little too much," Philadelphia coach Doug Collins said. "We had three or four turnovers in that one segment. (Greg) Monroe was terrific. (Brandon) Knight had that little stretch where he got hot and hit some shots and then (Will) Bynum was good off of the bench."

Philadelphia led by three at the break with Hawes, Young and Wright already in double-figures. The third quarter went back-and-forth for the majority of the stanza until the hosts utilized a 19-11 surge to close the action and take an 83-75 advantage into the fourth.

Singler scored 11 in the third, while Detroit outscored the visitors 33-21.

"Our ability to take care of the ball and get better shots in that third quarter, but Brandon and Kyle's energy on both ends really spurred us," Detroit coach Lawrence Frank said of the play to start the second half. "Obviously, Will (Bynum) was very good off the bench. These games still count and it was what team could put together a couple stops, what team could limit a second shot here or there just to get enough separation."

Detroit held a 30-23 lead after one quarter and extended the edge to 11 points early in the second. Philadelphia, though, took a 47-46 lead with three minutes left in the first half as Hawes capped off an 18-8 spurt with a layup.

"I think when you go into the offseason it is important to get a taste of what you have to do to get better," Collins added.

Game Notes

Philadelphia fell to 10-30 on the road this season ... Detroit ends the season at Brooklyn on Wednesday, while the Sixers play at Indiana ... The Pistons are 5-2 in the month of April ... Detroit finished with an 18-23 record at home this season ... Detroit also won four straight from Dec. 28 - Jan. 4.
