Anthony leads streaking Knicks over Suns
Dec 3, 2012 - 1:04 AM New York, NY (Sports Network) - Carmelo Anthony netted 34 points in the New York Knicks' 106-99 victory over the Phoenix Suns.Raymond Felton tallied 23 points and seven assists, while Tyson Chandler added 15 points and 13 rebounds for New York, which has won three straight and remained unbeaten at home.
Marcin Gortat had 18 points and 10 boards for the Suns, who have dropped their last three contests.
"I think they're a hell of basketball team. I really do," Phoenix head coach Alvin Gentry said. "When you add Iman Shumpert and Amar'e Stoudemire back to the mix, shoot, they're as good as anybody."
The Knicks took an 89-72 edge into the fourth, but Phoenix clawed back and made it interesting in the end.
Felton's fadeaway jumper gave the hosts a 103-93 cushion with 1:46 to play before Shannon Brown hit a pair from the line, P.J. Tucker drove in for two and Brown converted a layup to cut the deficit to 103-99 with 29.3 ticks left.
J.R. Smith then sunk two free throws at the other end, Brown was unable to knock down a 3-pointer and Chandler split a pair from the stripe to seal the outcome.
"Every game is not going to be a runaway or blowout for us and you have got to give them credit. They played hard, they were scrapping down the stretch and made a game out of it," Knicks coach Mike Woodson said about the Suns. "At the end of the night, we closed it out and was able to get the 'W'. That's what counts."
The Knicks stormed out of the gate and jumped out to a 21-6 advantage midway through the opening frame, but the Suns outscored the hosts, 14-3, over the rest of the frame to cut the deficit to 24-20 heading into the second.
An 11-2 run late in the second gave New York a 59-39 margin before Dragic hit a triple with 2.8 seconds left in the half to cut the margin to 17 heading into the break.
