Carter-Williams helps lead Sixers past Magic in double OT
Dec 4, 2013 - 5:41 AM Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Michael Carter-Williams recorded his first triple-double and the Philadelphia 76ers outlasted the Orlando Magic, 126-125, in two overtimes.Carter-Williams, who was named Rookie of the Month earlier Tuesday, totaled 27 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists for the Sixers, who had lost four in a row and eight of their previous nine.
Thaddeus Young chipped in 25 points and 12 boards in a game that featured 23 lead changes and 16 ties.
Evan Turner scored 24 points but committed eight of Philadelphia's 23 turnovers, missed a runner at the regulation buzzer and fouled Arron Afflalo taking a 3-pointer near the end of the first extra session.
Afflalo made all three free throws to tie the game, 118-118, and Turner turned the ball over at the other end to keep things even.
Carter-Williams hit a tie-breaking free throw in the second OT, put in a finger-roll a little later for a 123-120 Sixers lead, and assisted on a Young bucket that nearly sealed the win.
"We put the ball in his hands and trust him to make the right decision. And he did," Sixers center Spencer Hawes said of Carter-Williams.
Afflalo finished with a career-high 43 points, but drew iron on a potential game-tying 3-pointer in the closing seconds of Orlando's third straight loss.
Glen Davis also set a personal best with 33 points, and Victor Oladipo matched Carter-Williams' triple-double with a 26-point, 10-assist, 10-rebound effort.
"We came to play today, but we didn't finish it," Davis said.
Turner converted a three-point play to give the Sixers a seemingly healthy 96-89 lead with 4 1/2 minutes remaining in regulation, but Orlando scored the next nine points to keep the see-saw battle going.
The Sixers scored the next six points and were up by three, 104-101, after Young got a tough runner to fall with under a minute to play.
Davis, though, stepped back and drained his first 3-pointer of the season with 18.4 seconds to go, and Turner's contested pull-up in the lane bounced off the rim at the buzzer.
Afflalo scored 14 points in the first quarter, and the Magic's .688 shooting percentage in the opening frame gave them a 34-29 lead.
Orlando trailed at the break, 58-57, and went down by as many as 11 in the third after the Sixers went on a 14-2 run. Oladipo went coast-to-coast and got a floater to fall prior to the third-quarter buzzer to get the Magic within 85-80.
