Sixers seek revenge against the Magic
Dec 3, 2013 - 3:23 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Orlando Magic have won just three times in their last 12 games and one of those victories came against the Philadelphia 76ers last week in central Florida. The Magic aim for another win over the Sixers, but this time they will have to achieve the feat at Wells Fargo Center Tuesday night.
Orlando recorded a 105-94 win last Wednesday at Amway Center and former Sixer Nikola Vucevic posted 21 points, 16 rebounds and three blocks. Glen Davis had 19 points and both Arron Afflalo and Victor Oladipo added 18 points to lift Orlando to its third straight win over Philadelphia and 17th in the past 20 meetings between the teams.
Philadelphia, which has dropped five straight in Orlando, is just as bad at home recently in this series, going 3-12 in the previous 15 as the host.
The Magic opened a six-game road trip with Monday's 98-80 loss at Washington and fell for the ninth time in the past 12 contests. Afflalo had 21 points and Maurice Harkless added 16 off the bench. Vucevic went for 10 points and eight rebounds for the Magic, who made only 39 percent from the field and 3-of-15 from 3-point territory.
"Their bigs demanded a lot of attention," Magic coach Jacque Vaughn told NBA.com. "Nene was a force in the inside, (Marcin) Gortat was a force in the inside, and we had to react a little bit, and (Trevor) Ariza made 3s, and there you have it."
Nene, Gortat and Ariza combined for 51 points, with Ariza pouring in 24 points and hitting all four of his 3-pointers. John Wall went for 16 points and 13 assists for the Wizards.
Orlando is only 1-6 away from home and will also visit New York, Houston, Memphis and Charlotte.
Meanwhile, the 76ers are 3-12 since winning their first three games and have dropped four straight and eight of their previous nine games, including Sunday's 115-100 setback at Detroit.
Pistons forward Andre Drummond manhandled the Sixers to the tune of 31 points, 19 rebounds and six steals -- all career-highs. The Sixers were led by Thaddeus Young's 24 points, while Evan Turner scored 20 in defeat. Rookie Michael Carter-Williams added 15 points, six rebounds, six assists and six steals for Philadelphia, which struggled from the tip and trailed 40-25 after the first 12 minutes and 70-46 at halftime.
The 76ers can score as evidenced by their 103.0 points per game, but defense has been the issue this season. They are last in opponents' scoring (110.1 ppg) and have allowed 100-plus points in 16 of the 18 games.
"Our defense is most definitely a problem and I think some of that spins into the style of play we decided to play in regards to pace," Sixers head coach Brett Brown said. "We need a group effort. Anything we do has got to be done by a group."
Brown's group is 5-5 at home this season and will play three of the next four games in the City of Brotherly Love.
